Logic models - Examples

The following example is based on the fictional project called "Statistics for Economists at the University of Tobat", which we took (with approval of the authors and in slightly modified form) from the EDUM-Handbook (EDUM, 2003).


The Project

In cooperation with three other universities, the University of Tobat developed an e-learning course called "Statistics.com" for students of economics. This course was developed because of the impression that many applicants to the Master's degree program have failed as undergraduates to acquire an adequate knowledge of statistics. Hence, an entrance test was introduced; the statistics course will be mandatory for students with poor results in the test.

The course for the Master's students is completely web-based and run in distance mode, so that the students can freely decide, when and where they would like to spend time on the course. But over the coming years, parts of the web-based course will also supplement the Statistics I and II traditional courses for first year students. The intended approach here is 'blended learning': While the traditional lecture courses on theory are still taught in the classroom, the exercises and the seminars take place online. This is intended to allow students and teachers to work flexibly. In the medium term, students are expected to work more independently from home.

Under the supervision of a freelance project coordinator, each of the four universities participating in the project developed two modules. Collectively, these eight modules fitted together to comprise the whole statistics course.
