Needs Analysis - Examples

[SEA:PAT] Systemic-Evolutionary Approach to the Introduction of Multimedia into the Classroom (Gauss et al., 2002)

A needs analysis was conducted in the context of the development of multimedia learning modules and a web-based learning environment for the process and systems technology department. It was used to analyse the characteristics of the students and the general conditions and to define the general goals. As well as specific questions posed in relation to attitudes towards and expectations from multimedia in teaching, the course as it already stood was also evaluated. This allowed a deduction of the need for didactic measures from the current educational situation.
Various methods were used to carry out the needs analysis:

Quattropole Reports: A needs analysis "e-Learning in Language Training" (Reuter et al., 2005)

The report (in French) deals with a needs analysis in the field of computer-aided language teaching. The goal was to analyse needs and expectations related to an e-learning language program. It is important that the study  not only documented needs in relation to language education, it was also designed to arrive at a better understanding of potential users'familiarity with the computer medium and their abilities to use it. The needs analysis was conducted by means of a questionnaire that allowed the formulation of specific recommendations regarding the desired characteristics of an e-learning language program.

The questionnaire can be found in French, German and English in the appendix to the report. A more detailed description of the questionnaire can be found starting on page 16. Even if the questionnaire cannot be completely adopted as it stands, it does contain ideas for question formulations or about subject which must be thoroughly examined in the course of a needs analysis. The report offers information about how one can use the results.
